And the winners are…

Metro MagazineMetro Magazine has released part 1 of it’s eighth annual MetroBravo awards. Among others, the categories include restaurants, media personalities, professional services and golf courses.

Overall, I found the list to be a little dry, with several big-name chains taking the top prize in categories like best local coffeehouse (Starbucks) and best french fries (McDonalds). But, a few local highlights and notables include:

Top new restaurant
South

Top chef
Ashley Christiansen, Enoteca Vin

Best sushi
Waraji

Best pizza
Capital Creations

Top dessert
Hayes Barton Dessertery & Café

If you can stand to sort through the lack of distinguishing formatting, the full list can be found here: http://www.metronc.com/article/?id=1375

Also, a “top anything” list is always good for stirring up debate. If you have anything to add or dispute, post it in the comments and let the games begin.

What the ….?? Red, Hot, and Blue gets the nod for best BBQ? Don’t get me wrong, I like Red, Hot and Blue. My mom (being from Memphis) raised us on that stuff, but this area has a most worthy BBQ of its own. No mention of places like Clyde Coopers or Olde Time BBQ?

These people are obviously high on the liquid crack McDonald’s uses to fry their potatoes….

Also speaking of fries, has anyone tried the sweet potato fries of Two Guys Grille (not to be confused with Five Guys)? I might give them the nod for fries …

I seriously wish people would get to know Hayashi (see my review on Citysearch). It’s on the Wakefield side of Raleigh, but Raleigh nonetheless, and I have never had sushi to beat it.

    A) BBQ - I wish we were lucky enough to have Alan & Sons (Chapel Hill) expand to Raleigh - Its the best BBQ this side of Wilburs (located in Goldsboro and arguably the best eastern bbq in the state)

    B) Fries - I’m not sure if this counts, but for a few weeks during the State Fair, Al’s Fries are the best, hands down

Olde Time takes it for Raleigh BBQ (is Clyde Coopers still open, I heard nasty rumor that it was closing).

The BBQ Joint (in CH) does a great job with BBQ as well, but its not Raleigh.

    CarnifeX,

Cooper’s is still open. It looks like they’ll remain open. The rumors are probably popping up due to the fact that Progress Energy has bought up the entire block around Cooper’s and has pretty much torn everything down around them. But, the N&O did a story recently about how plans are in the works for a new building on that block that will not affect Cooper’s. I actually spoke with one of the owners of Cooper’s (an old southern gal) and I asked her about it. Her responce was as follows: (you’ll have to imagine her awesome NC southern accent)

“Sweetie, Clyde Cooper’s is a downtown Raleigh icon. Not even big-time power companies can mess with icons.”

There ya go. Clyde Cooper’s — still stickin’ it to the man after all these years.
