Extreme Makeover: Shopping Center Edition

Written by S. Beaumont and filed under Business, Real Estate

Holly Park Shopping CenterThe N&O is reporting that the Holly Park shopping center off of Wake Forest Road will be sold to a Charlotte-based developer in the near future.

If you’re familiar with the location, you should be relieved to hear this. The center is badly outdated and definitely in need of a facelift. Given its prime location right off of the beltline, it always seemed that much more could be done with the area.

This shopping center currently houses a DMV, the Shaba Shabu restaurant and the nearby Melting Pot among some non-notable others. I haven’t heard or seen anything about what the sale will mean for these and other new businesses, but would imagine that a big name retailer or restaurant could be added as the renovations commence.

In similar news, the TBJ is reporting that the Pleasant Valley shopping center off of Glenwood Avenue will be adding a Golfsmith superstore, replacing the vacancy left by Best Buy when they moved down the road near Crabtree Valley Mall.

Pleasant Valley seemed to have some life brought back into it when Gold’s Gym was added in the old movie theater slot around the side of the center, but with the Best Buy move the center was in desperate need of a new big-name draw.

Honestly, Pleasant Valley needs a major revamp before it can even begin to compete with some of the newer developments…. High end retail has been cornered by Cameron Village, North Hills, and to a slightly lesser extent Crabtree. In my opinion IKEA and Trader Joes would be the perfect combo to pull PV out of its current funk.

I would love to see a Trader Joe’s make its way into North Raleigh. I definitely agree that it could really be a nice draw for that center.

Well, both shopping centers are in need of help, for sure. (And yeah, Trader Joes would be good…I’d say for Holly Park though instead of Pleasant Valley–its proximity to Costco would give it an edge.)
I knew when World Gym closed that unless Holly Park got a new owner, things would only continue to go downhill. I am surprised though that Shaba Shabu has lasted so long and has done well. Such a nice, eclectic place is something you’d expect downtown or maybe North Hills…amazing they’re doing good there of all places.
Pleasant Valley’s problem is still partially its appearance…it just seems like this cheesy pastel 80s Miami-wannabe place.

Well said in regards to Pleasant Valley’s appearance! I could never quite put my finger on that look until now.

Rumor has it…10,000 sf Trader Joe’s free standing at Holly Park. Replaces Enterprise Rent A Car and Wake Paint. Parking in the rear. Spurs needed face lift redevelopment at site. Alcatel next????

^Are you serious? Where you hear that rumor?!? I like, I like…

    TBJ has it covered here:

Perhaps the TBJ in “ITBJD” (see top comment) is not a coincidence.

^Heh, I assure you there is no connection. TJ’s would be a great catch for Holly Park.

Heard the same/similar rumor awhile back about TJ’s in North Raleigh from an employee at the one in Cary. Says that their store in Cary is doing far better than TJ expected, and they are actively seeking a second location in the area. N Raleigh is their top choice.
