ESPNUTime Warner Cable has added ESPNU to its digital cable lineup, and if you’re a sports fan this couldn’t have come at a better time. ESPNU has picked up several NCSU games over the past few years that local fans haven’t been able to watch outside of a few local sports bars with satellite access. You can find it on channel 140 locally. Read more

Our friends over at New Raleigh seemed to take a little exception to our most recent top 10 list, posting their own “The Real Top 10 Ways You Can Conserve Raleigh’s Water.” From the post:

Another Raleigh blog decided to make light of the situation, and while I can understand the need to lighten the mood, considering the $200 first offenders fine, I think it’s important to share some creative and mostly passive ways that one can save water.

Splash1. Replace your morning coffee with a swift slap in the face - be a friend and offer one to your co-workers as well
2. Delay doing the laundry until you’ve worn at least one of those “back corner items” that just never seem to make it into the rotation
3. Offer to share a shower with that cute guy/girl you haven’t had the nerve to ask out

4. Try to reason with your lawn - offer to spend more time together in exchange for half of its normal watering Read more

Raleigh City Plaza RenderingAre you up to speed with the plans for Raleigh’s City Plaza? I started to research the project for a post and came across Bob Geary’s article on Indyweek.com. It covers everything from Jim Goodman’s initial plan for a raised public square to a current design and layout centered around shopping. The primary reason stated for accepting the latter was the activity retail environments can create. Read more

Following up on my previous post, I’ve added a new “widget” to the site that will let you scan the headlines of the great sites below and others that cover the Raleigh area. You can find the link in the main navigation bar (news feeds). This is just an experiment - so as always, let me know what you think.

(One small note, this isn’t meant to replace visits to these sites, but to help promote them. If any site owners wish to be removed, just let me know.)

Local Blogs - Raleigh North CarolinaSince launching RFP, I’ve tried to completely immerse myself in all of the Raleigh news sources I can find. Luckily, this isn’t too difficult in today’s online world, were hyperlinks abound and search engines know more about us than our own mothers. Without a doubt, some of my favorite finds have been local writers like myself who have taken it on themselves to publish their view of Raleigh. In doing so, they’ve started some excellent conversations and helped to fuel a wonderful channel of small-scale online publishing.

Hopefully you’ll find one or two in this list that you haven’t visited before, and if I’ve missed any - which I’m sure I have, please add them to the list. Read more

The N&O just posted an update to the North Hills East/Tax break debate. The article outlines Meeker’s position against the breaks, a view shared by the majority of our readers who voted in the web-poll or took the time to leave comments. (See previous article: North Hills East - Will Kane be Able).

The article contains a quote from Meeker, stating: “It is not good public policy to provide subsidies in development in areas of our City where development is already occurring.”

BurgersStarting about a week after the final bowl game of each year, college football analysts and prognosticators already begin predicting the next season’s results. These predictions are in many cases just newspaper column/TV segment filler, as it is pretty ridiculous to try predicting the outcome of games that won’t be played for months. That said, I read/watch them with great anticipation, to see what the “experts” think my team will do next season. Being nothing more than an avid college football fan, here’s my attempt at how this season will go for the Wolfpack:

Sept. 1 vs. Central Florida WIN - O’Brien and Co. get win #1, but it will be closer than some might think

Sept. 8 @ Boston College - LOSS - The Eagles have too much experience for the Pack in their first road game

Sept. 15 vs. Wofford - WIN - Back home and cruising…

Sept. 22 vs. Clemson - WIN - In upset fashion, the “12th Man” home field advantage propels the Pack

Sept. 29 vs. Louisville - LOSS - The biggest non-conference home game since Ohio State - Louisville has too much offense Read more

NCSU Sched PicEarly August brings with it a number of things: kids go back to school, summer heat hits its peak and hurricane season begins. For college sports fans however, August means something else – the start of fall football practice for your favorite college football teams and the thoughts of tailgating, the Top 25, rivalries and bowl games. As a somewhat obsessed NC State Wolfpack alum (along with fellow RFP contributors), I think the time is right to take a look at what the ‘07 season has in store. In this 2 part kick-off special we will take a look at the season to come, from major changes in the coaching staff to key players and predictions for the 2007 schedule. Read more
