Carolina Hurricanes 10th Anniversary LogoNo more diapers, no more pacifiers – The Carolina Hurricanes are ten years old and all grown up.

It doesn’t seem like it has been that long, but it was 1997 when the Hartford Whalers announced their move to Raleigh, NC. They arrived after spending two years in Greensboro, NC while the Entertainment Sports Arena (now called the RBC Center) was being completed.

Initially, hockey was a tough sell in an area known for its college basketball, but by the time they’d moved to Raleigh, the Canes were really starting to shake things up. Most people still remember the run they had in 2002, and then there was that whole Stanley Cup thing a few years ago. Apart from last season, which was pretty forgettable, it’s been hard to ignore the Carolina Hurricanes over the last ten years.

The Canes have a lot of festivities planned for the upcoming 10th anniversary season. For starters, fans can hear Canes announcer John Forslund speak on the impact of the club’s last ten years at the Raleigh City Museum on September 15th at 2pm. The following day the Canes will open their Caniac Carnival at the RBC center as well as beginning exhibition play against the Washington Capitals. The Carnival opens at 10am and the game starts at 3pm.
