Old Bar to Reopen in January

Charlie Goodnight’s LogoThe Old Bar, located beneath Charlie Goodnight’s Comedy Club, is scheduled to reopen on January 12th.

I’ve spent my fair share of time in the Old Bar, and from what I remember of the place (which isn’t a whole lot due to 32oz. mug night) it was always a pretty dirty place. But, it’s a decent spot to grab a drink after CG show and it certainly has character.

The relaunch is part of Goodnight’s 25th anniversary–a milestone that I have a somewhat hard time believing. Despite the fact that they occasionally bring in some a-name talent and that they don’t have much competition, my recent experiences at CG have left me a little disappointed. The shows haven’t been that bad, but the way they have that place set up, sitting people on top of each other, it can be pretty uncomfortable. That may be acceptable for a live comedy show, except that I find it hard to get out of there with someone else for under a hundred bucks after the tickets, a few drinks and the tip. And for that kind of money I find it hard not to just seek out a decent restaurant for a good meal.

I’m not sure what they’ve been doing with the Old Bar currently. If anyone knows, please fill me in.

It became “Underground” and was trying for a little more class. Turns out being next to Shitty Limits doesn’t bode well for adding “class” (see Depot District). So they’re going back to their roots and bring back the Old Bar. I am excited, my liver is fearful. $5 jagerbombs all day everyday was a quote that i heard…yikes.

    Cheers!

Well put, Colin. Thanks for the update.

Actually, The Underground was one of my favorites. Their newsletter outlined their move to the ‘upper’ portion of CG’s and I can say, I am extremely disappointed. The second story of CG’s is dirty feeling and well, it’s the common bathroom for the club and the ‘high end’ restaurant. Cheap, cheap, cheap. The Underground, as I understood, was owned and operated by a husband and wife team. The food was delightful, albeit pricey. But there was a sense of pride in what they did that made it into the aura. I just thing CG is going to ruin it (they are partnering with The Underground folks, and also, renaming it). I will support them — always support local — but I am VERY WARY.

As for CG, well, I agree with you about how they cramp everyone in there. They bring in some talent but I don’t see any improvements into their facility, which to me says nothing about giving back to your customers.

And the Old Bar, to me, sucked. I went for Fajita Margarita night to get my shitty mexican food and a discount to CG’s show…but I was young and immature then :-).

The Old Bar had food? Yikes. I’d steer clear of that stuff. I much prefer the liquid courage that they provide there. And, oh, how they shovel that stuff out. Wohoo! I’m doing my liver stretches to get it ready for Saturday night; The grand re-opening of the Old Bar.

The Underground was not run by Charlie Goodnights. It was Chef Daniel Taylor’s restaurant. It was the best damn place to eat dinner in Raleigh - especially for the price. Anyone else in Raleigh offering wrapped rabbit loin for $9? I brought a video crew from Tokyo to dine their one night. They were amazed by the food. We ended up ordering everything on the menu to pass around. And it was not even close to pricey for a great meal. We visited Zealy & Ritz on Glenwood South and that place cost twice as much. We had ordered their meal special that was $10 cheaper because of first friday.

And rumors that the Underground staff would be moving upstairs to the Grille at Goodnights is not so. Chef Daniel Taylor is no longer in the building. We’re eager to see what his next move is.
