WHAT: Picket at Wake County Public School Board against Dr. Teresa Abron
WHEN: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 1:00 pm
WHERE: Wake County Public School Board Office at 3600 Wake Forest Rd., Raleigh, NC

Background
On the morning December 4th, 2007 there was a fight between two seventh grade girls at the Dillard Drive Middle School. One of the girls was African American and the other was Hispanic. The Hispanic girl tied a bandanna around her leg that symbolized her participation in a gang, and the African American girl, upset by the bandanna, asked/told the other girl to take it off and when she refused, they began arguing. The argument became heated and friends of the girls got involved, but before actual fists were thrown, the girls were separated. Read more

If you’re looking for something to do tonight, you should consider heading down to Hillsborough Street. I’d really love to see this take off and put Raleigh on the Halloween map. There is no reason that we can’t offer people a reason to stay in town for this annual event. See the story on New Raleigh.

We have no idea which of “businesses” mentioned are actually condoning this Hallow’s Eve event but we have all seen the end-of-semester Hillsborough Hike render the street in a teaming chaos. I can also attest to the saturation of police officers that the city will provide, both marked and undercover, ready to arrest those violating open container and property laws. This fact alone will make it tough for the event to rival the Chapel Hill bohemian energy or the ECU anarchy.

If you’ve got a radio at your desk, or if you’re perhaps lucky enough not to be stuck behind a desk at all, tune into The State of Things on WUNC (91.5 FM) today starting at Noon. Yesterday they talked about the impact development has had on our water supply, and today they’ll be continuing their “drought narrative” by discussing our complex climate and what the media’s role is in covering this event.

As is usually the case, both should be informative and well covered topics.

Note: This came in from one of our readers. If anyone has first hand experience with one of these shows, post it to the comments for others who may/may not want to attend.

Deep fried candy bars, thrill rides assembled by questionable characters, pig races, concerts and “The Smallest Woman in the World.” Sound like fun? Good news – the State Fair will be here in just over 2 weeks!

In case you’re wondering the Wolfpack and the ‘Canes will be playing out-of-town for two weeks to avoid State Fair / football / hockey mega-traffic. My hat goes off to the rocket scientist who managed to organize that. I seem to recall that it took me over two hours to get home (5 miles away) last year. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I was able to get in and out of the fair without having to deal with a ridiculous amount of traffic, a problem these 3 probably could not have imagined as they donned their best threads and hopped on the “express to Raleigh” in 1914 to enjoy the festivities.

Join local craft vendors this weekend for The Crafter’s Flea Market in downtown Raleigh.

The event will host more than 40 vendors from Raleigh and neighboring towns, and attendees can expect to find local items such as: pottery, jewelry, handmade soap, handcrafted tiles, wearable art, clothing, fabric, beads and more.

Began in July 2005 as market for local craftspeople to sell their handcrafted wares, the event has become such a success that founder Mary Michelle Little plans to host the market 3-4 times yearly. Little notes the open-air markets of New York and Paris as her inspiration for the event, and believed that “The Crafter’s Flea Market would be a great way to create that feeling of community and energy in Raleigh.”

The market will be held between Johnson and Tucker Streets in Glenwood South, in the parking lot at Ornamentea and surrounding areas. A rain date of September 22nd has been set if necessary.
