Wake Tech to Add Sports Teams
Filed Under Sports | 2 Comments
Wake Tech is launching a Junior College sports program this Fall. The program will start with women’s volleyball, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s golf teams, and will add basketball in 2009 and softball and baseball in 2010. They’ll rent facilities early-on and will seek private donors to fund future development.
I think this is a great news for Raleigh. Besides making Wake Tech a more attractive place to go to school, it also creates jobs, provides a new athletic attraction, aids local colleges in terms of athletic transfers and creates a potential source of revenue for the school and other local businesses.

Lame

This is lame.
Due to budgetary restraints this year, the Technician was unable to print this year’s edition of the Daily Tar Hell — the annual spoof edition of UNC’s student newspaper. The edition historically came out on the day N.C. State’s men’s basketball team faces the Tar Heels in Raleigh.I know many of you have come to expect the Daily Tar Hell each year, and we apologize for not being able to run it. It’s an edition that we enjoy producing and something we look forward to each year.
Any thoughts on us not printing the edition this year are welcome as always. We are grateful for your continued support and interest in our newspaper.
I’d love to know what took financial precedence. Considering that to many (myself included) this was the best issue of the year, it seems that priorities are misaligned. And why not at least put out a digital copy? I wish I had known sooner–I definitely would have tried and picked up the slack.
Tip-off is at 7 and the game will be televised on ESPN.

Rivalry Week: UNC @ NCSU
Filed Under Sports | 4 Comments
This Saturday at noon in Carter Finley Stadium, the N.C. State - UNC rivalry takes on a new look. First year coaches Tom O’Brien and Butch Davis go head-to-head for the first time in this heated “Tobacco Road” rivalry–although neither are strangers to big rivalry games.
A matchup that just three weeks ago looked about as exciting as watching progress on the Soleil Center, now pits two teams on the up-and-up with legitimate bowl aspirations. Tom O’Brien silenced the few critics who began to question his coaching abilities by coming out of N.C. State’s bye week and winning three consecutive games, breathing new life into the Pack fanbase. Any “expert” that tells you they saw this turn around coming is lying through his or her teeth. The Pack were left for dead and what Tom O’Brien did during that bye week is nothing short of a football miracle with the number of injured stars that Pack have lost this season. 2 wins in the seasons final 3 games will leave the Pack bowl eligible.
The Tarheels come in with a 3-6 record, but have shown steady improvement as the season has progressed. The Tarheels can score points, but struggle from time-to-time defensively and are going through the growing pains associated with starting a number of freshmen and sophomores. By winning their remaining three games, the Heels become bowl eligible–an added motivation this week, although I suspect motivation is not an issue for either squad.
Look for an exciting game this weekend. The teams matchup quite well–both are coming off wins, the rivalry speaks for itself in this region and the coaching is impressive on both sidelines. I look for a back-and-forth game that will be decided during the last few possessions. My prediction is the Pack 24, Heels 21, as the homefield advantage tips the scales in favor of the Wolfpack.
The game will be televised locally on WRAL beginning at noon on Saturday. Weigh in with your game and score predictions and finalize those tailgating plans…it’s almost time for some football.

Photo Series: Riddick Stadium
Filed Under Photo Series, Sports | 1 Comment
N.C. State has spent a lot of money on its football facilities with the addition of the Murphy Center and the Vaughn Towers. That said, we thought it would be fun to look back at the Pack’s old stomping grounds, Riddick Stadium.
In the first picture you can see a football game being played on Riddick Field. I’m not sure what date the picture was taken, but my guess is the 1920s. The second picture was taken in 1946 during a football game between NCSU and Duke. Notice the upgrades to Riddick Stadium that were added between the first and second photos. I think they came in the 1930s in the form of permanent bleachers and a field house. Read more

The Pack travel to Tallahassee this weekend to take on the Florida State Seminoles and an old friend in Chuck Amato. Amato spent over 20 years on the Seminole coaching staff before taking over the Wolfpack, and he immediately returned this offseason after being relieved of his duties. I’ve said all along I truly believe that Amato was the primary reason for the renewed passion in NC State football as well as the front man for a $100 million dollar fundraising campaign to make Carter Finley what it is today. I doubt there is much ill will from many Wolfpack fans, as overall the Amato era was a positive one. Chuck is now back in his familiar role as Bobby Bowden’s right-hand man while coaching up the linebackers. I for one am glad to see that he was welcomed back to Florida State. Read more

After being absolutely manhandled by the Clemson Tigers last Saturday, there is no relief this week as the Louisville Cardinals come to Raleigh. Louisville boasts one of (if not the most) potent offenses in the nation, led by Heisman Trophy candidate and sure-fire first round draft pick Brian Brohm. Last week Brohm lit up Syracuse for over 550 yards passing and 5 touchdowns, although it wasn’t enough for a win. Read more

The Wolfpack face their stiffest test of the young season this week as #15 Clemson comes to Carter-Finley Saturday for a noon kickoff. The Pack are coming off their first win of the season over Wofford last weekend. Clemson comes to town with a perfect 3-0 record and boasts one of the most talented running back duos in the nation. This does not bode well for the Pack, who simply can’t stop anyone on the ground, having given up nearly 250 yards per game rushing.
Last week’s win, no matter who it was against, was most certainly a confidence boost. It ended a nine game losing streak which at the time the third longest in the nation (thanks to the Blue Devils, no one is in real danger of taking over the longest streak). The Pack must come out prepared on Saturday as it must play a nearly perfect game to get a win. Expect a loud crowd Saturday, as this is a bit of a rivalry historically referred to as the “Textile Bowl”, that will certainly give the Pack an edge. My heart says Pack in an upset, but my head says Clemson runs (literally) all over the Pack on their way to a 24-14 win.

Wolfpack Football: In Search of Win #1
Filed Under Sports | 5 Comments
After a rocky start to say the least, the Wolfpack football team looks for win #1 of the season, and the Tom O’Brien era, this Saturday against Wofford. The 1-AA Wofford Terriers have won both of their first two games, while the Pack sits at 0-2 after last weeks defeat at Boston College. Game time on Saturday is 6:00 PM at Carter Finley Stadium.
Much of the talk this week surrounded the play from the quarterback position. Harrison Beck took the reigns last week, showing flashes of excellence, but turning the ball over 6 times – a stat that all but cripples your chances of winning. Beck will get another opportunity this week to show he can play within the system and make smart decisions. I think we’ll see a better performance and I believe that Beck can develop into a solid player over the next few years. Read more

Hurricanes Celebrate 10th Birthday
Filed Under Sports | Leave a Comment
No more diapers, no more pacifiers – The Carolina Hurricanes are ten years old and all grown up.
It doesn’t seem like it has been that long, but it was 1997 when the Hartford Whalers announced their move to Raleigh, NC. They arrived after spending two years in Greensboro, NC while the Entertainment Sports Arena (now called the RBC Center) was being completed.
Initially, hockey was a tough sell in an area known for its college basketball, but by the time they’d moved to Raleigh, the Canes were really starting to shake things up. Most people still remember the run they had in 2002, and then there was that whole Stanley Cup thing a few years ago. Apart from last season, which was pretty forgettable, it’s been hard to ignore the Carolina Hurricanes over the last ten years.
The Canes have a lot of festivities planned for the upcoming 10th anniversary season. For starters, fans can hear Canes announcer John Forslund speak on the impact of the club’s last ten years at the Raleigh City Museum on September 15th at 2pm. The following day the Canes will open their Caniac Carnival at the RBC center as well as beginning exhibition play against the Washington Capitals. The Carnival opens at 10am and the game starts at 3pm.
