Lame
Written by S. Beaumont and filed under Editorial, Sports | 2 Comments
This is lame.
Due to budgetary restraints this year, the Technician was unable to print this year’s edition of the Daily Tar Hell — the annual spoof edition of UNC’s student newspaper. The edition historically came out on the day N.C. State’s men’s basketball team faces the Tar Heels in Raleigh.I know many of you have come to expect the Daily Tar Hell each year, and we apologize for not being able to run it. It’s an edition that we enjoy producing and something we look forward to each year.
Any thoughts on us not printing the edition this year are welcome as always. We are grateful for your continued support and interest in our newspaper.
I’d love to know what took financial precedence. Considering that to many (myself included) this was the best issue of the year, it seems that priorities are misaligned. And why not at least put out a digital copy? I wish I had known sooner–I definitely would have tried and picked up the slack.
Tip-off is at 7 and the game will be televised on ESPN.

Parents and Community Members to Picket School Board
Written by S. Beaumont and filed under Education, Event | 2 Comments
Editor’s Note: The following was submitted through our contact form. I have no background of ACORN, but can appreciate how this story could be of community interest.
On Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at 1:00 pm, ACORN members and concerned parents and citizens will come together in a demonstration in response to the segregated assemblies that occurred at Dillard Drive Middle School in Raleigh, NC, on December 4, 2007.
WHO: ACORN members, parents, and concerned citizens
WHAT: Picket at Wake County Public School Board against Dr. Teresa Abron
WHEN: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 1:00 pm
WHERE: Wake County Public School Board Office at 3600 Wake Forest Rd., Raleigh, NC
Background
On the morning December 4th, 2007 there was a fight between two seventh grade girls at the Dillard Drive Middle School. One of the girls was African American and the other was Hispanic. The Hispanic girl tied a bandanna around her leg that symbolized her participation in a gang, and the African American girl, upset by the bandanna, asked/told the other girl to take it off and when she refused, they began arguing. The argument became heated and friends of the girls got involved, but before actual fists were thrown, the girls were separated. …Click here to continue reading

IndyWeek Facelift

The Independent has revamped their website.
Overall, I really like it. It’s bold, the advertisements are fairly unobtrusive and it gives user comments center stage. Nice work, Indy.

Rhett and Link
Written by S. Beaumont and filed under Local Sites, Entertainment | Leave a Comment
Have you been to RhettandLink.com? If not, you’re in a group quickly becoming the minority among web surfers who are into original, humorous web-based content.
If you decide to pay them a visit, you’re in for a treat. These guys put out some very high quality viral videos, jingles and short films–all enabled and distributed by the glorious world wide web. I won’t go into more detail about their background. You’re better off just reading it for yourself, because they’re equally as good writers as they are performers.
So what’s the link to Raleigh here and why am I posting this on the Raleigh Free Press? Well, besides being NC natives, both Link and Rhett are NC State grads with engineering degrees that decided that a desk job just wasn’t for them.
Give them a visit and help to support some local boys made good. Here’s one of my favorites, Crashing the 2007 Grammy’s.

Free Wine Tastings at Amra’s
Written by S. Beaumont and filed under Food and Beverage, Entertainment | 4 Comments
Beginning tomorrow, Amra’s (map) will be hosting a series of free wine tastings on Tuesday nights. The full schedule is below.
- February 5 - Winemaker from Puerto Viejo Wines
- February 12 - Wine Trading Company
- March 11 - Ararat Wines
- April 8 - Epicur Wines
- May 13 - Mutual Wines
- June 10 - Wine Trading Company
- July 8 - Dionysus Wines
- August 12 - Epicur Wines
- September 9 - Mutual Wines
- October 14 - Turner Wine Imports
- November 11 - Turner Wine Imports
- December 9 - Epicur Wines
If you’ve never been to Amra’s, I’d recommend giving it a shot. As a cigar and jazz club, it has a really nice feel to it and can be a nice alternative to the traditional pub. My only complaint is that it can be a little too noisy when trying to catch up with friends.

Is the Joke on Us?
Written by S. Beaumont and filed under Editorial | 4 Comments
70 or so days ago, when it was reported that we were going to run out of water in that amount of time, I started a countdown timer on the site to track our aquatic demise and to encourage people to conserve their water. The timer has recently expired– and while we still have water, the drought is far from behind us.
Along those lines, there was a short but thought-provoking note in today’s N&O Editorial section. It caught my eye and is listed below.
The Jokes on Us
Yet another drought story Jan. 30: “As lake dries, Raleigh drinks more.” I just realized this whole drought thing is nothing more than a scam. We aren’t in any danger of running out of water. If we were, certainly the City Council would have acted responsibly by now.
- Diane Hamilton, Raleigh
Maybe it’s just a slam on the Council, but I also think it’s a (possibly tongue in cheek) thought process that I think a lot of other people share. One that has us trained to believe that our leaders will protect us from ourselves, and that our personal responsibilities take a back seat to regulation and enforcement.
Food for thought, not to be washed down with Raleigh’s H20.

Raleigh Now the 49th Largest City in the Country
Written by S. Beaumont and filed under Development | Leave a Comment
I got your Twin City right here…
We continue to grow, jumping Minneaplois to become the 49th largest city in the country. The water cooler question of the day: is this growth a sign of health and vigor or are we busting at the seams and struggling to keep up?
According to biannual population estimates released by the Growth Management Division of the City of Raleigh Department of City Planning, Raleigh has grown to become the 49th largest city in the country, surpassing Minneapolis, Minn., in population.
Raleigh’s estimated population as of Jan. 1, 2008, is 374,320, an increase of 6,325 persons since July 1, 2007 when the city’s population was estimated to be 367,995. The city’s population increased by 14,988, or 4.17 percent, from Jan. 1, 2007 to Jan. 1, 2008. Estimates are based on the number of dwelling units, the average number of people per household and the dwelling occupancy/vacancy averages.
